On My Own

It was quiet enough here. That was the way he liked it. No stupid adults to hover over his shoulder and offer advice that he already knew. His mother hadn't been stupid. Even though she had thought that he would be safely protected within the village at least until he was older, she had thought it wise to teach him the ways of the wild wolf so that he would know what to do should the need arise. Too bad she'd died in the fires...

Sparrow shook the thought from his mind, focusing on the path before him. He didn't particularly like wandering along the cliffs of these mountains, but not knowing exactly where you're going is bound to get you into trouble eventually. The current environment in which the worn path wound was exceptionally barren. There were a few patches of brush along the slopes to his right, but after the small bit of flat earth that the path clung to there was a sheer drop, perhaps a hundred feet down. The pup peered down over the edge, making sure his teeth were tight enough around his small catch of a young rabbit. As microscopic as it was, it would feed him for at least today, so dropping it was not an option.

He thought vaguely about what it would be like to fall that far....

Growling to himself (well it wasn't much of a growl; he was just a pup so it was more like some kind of growling mewl), he thought about more pleasant things while he tore himself away from the edge and walked along the path closer to the slope than the cliff. He thought about finding himself an abandoned badger's den or something and spending the night in a warmer place than under a tree. He smiled a little at the thought of having a full belly and a warm place to sleep. It wasn't like it was rare for him to do this - he could take care of himself - but it was always a pleasure.

His blue eyes wandered around the barren landscape, wondering why he hadn't seen another wolf in weeks. He reflexively tightened his grip on his kill; no bully adult would be taking his meal this time...

i found u >3 ))

The mountains held no real secrets within the depths of their formation, but for travellers that saught refuge and to wander safely, they should have known the landscape better. For someone on their own could get themselves killed. Within the mountains there were goat herds, packs, deadlier things than animals like traps, and most importantly, mountain lions. For a pup to wander into the unknown territory, he would have to think twice before thinking he were safe.

Unbeknownst to him, a mountain pride lay a bit yonder wind of where the pup stood now. If the young one wondered why he hadn't seen any other wolves in the area, this would be why. The mountain pride consisted of many strong cats. And this pup's roaming would do him no good. Further in his trail, there was something following him. It wasn't big or anything, but slim and sneaky. It followed Sparrow until the boy found a meal in a tiny morsel of rabbit. Snickering to themself, the creature weaved through, before finding a way to sneak up on Sparrow. Give him a little spook, just for fun.

(( don't worry. the cat pride is friendly to wolves. Lol. ))

Eventually, Sparrow came to a gap in the path where the cliff jutted inwards quite a bit, cutting the path in two by a twenty foot chasm. Luckily enough, there was a rock slab that had fallen over the gap in the path, creating a strong, makeshift bridge that travelers had used to cross. On the other hand, the scenery was quite amazing. The reason the cliff pulled inwards was because of a waterfall that raged just five feet in. The pup edged closer to the drop to view the white water, in enough awe that he loosened his grip on the rabbit enough so that he would drop it if he moved at all...

But then an amazing thing happened.
...His stomach growled.

It startled Sparrow enough so that he gripped his meal tighter once again and jerked his head downwards at the source of the rumble, eyes widening. Needless to say, once he realized how hungry he was, he felt rather silly to have been afraid of such a minor sound. He looked to his right, over the cliff, then to the left at the waterfall. Now that he looked more closely, he could see that there was a small cave behind the water. It wasn't a tunnel, as most people think; just a small depression in the rock face. What was more, there was a thin outcropping that lead into this cave from the path he was on. He took it, being careful not to trip and fall to his death. Though he let a few pebbles slide into the depths below, he made it safely to the cave.

Grinning at his success, he let the rabbit fall from his muzzle.

"Wouldn't Mother be proud of me if she saw..."

Talking to himself was half the fun out here when you were alone; he only worried about himself when he began talking to his dead mother as if she were beside him. Things changed, and that was that. No use lingering on the past. Mother had taught that to him...

As the young wolf went on with his travels, unaware of the lurking feline that followed him, he seemed to lead her straight to a new area the young lioness never knew existed. Her golden eyes sparkled at the sight of the waterfall. Never had she seen or heard such a loud sound. Never had she known such a loud noise could show beauty at all. Dazzled by the calm waters sparkle below, she noted that the pup as well had been in awestruck at the sight before the both of them.

The waterfall was a bit aways from the both of them, so the noise was drowned to the point where it could have been taken as just a warning growl or something. Watching the wolf pup make his way toward an empty cavern, the young lioness crept along after him now. But the sudden scream of his stomach that wished for food instantly made her leap up and give a random meow of surprise. It surprised even the young one! Cursing to herself she'd blown her cover (even though she still was in hiding) she stayed as best she could, blended behind a rock. She wouldnt' dare turn to see if the pup heard her or not.

But it seemed she heard a few mumblings from the youngster, before the padding of paws began to simmer and die down. Glancing over the rocks, she watched the pup enter the cavern. Curious, the lioness already began to follow. Since the pup was now in the cave, she didn't need to hide! She'd rather surprise him at the entrance!

Reclining into a sitting position, Sparrow took a look around his temporary retreat, his sea blue gaze bright with curiosity. The rock that the cave pushed into glittered softly in the dim light that the waterfall let through, like hundreds of tiny stars on a solid night sky. Again, the cave wasn't very big, but it was large enough for him to get up a good run if he wanted to. Still the further in he gazed, the darker it became; there would be no wandering to the back of the cave today. Perhaps tomorrow, earlier in the day. It was nearly twilight now...

(Its short, but I'm holding off for a reason. ;))

As the young lioness who went by the name of Tamera continued to creep along the edges of the terrain, she'd stopped to glance at what Sparrow had looked at beforehand. "Whoaa...." Tamera murmured to herself. Down below she saw the water flowing, but boy was that a huge drop! Getting away from the edge, she then began to go toward the cave.

When she'd come to the side, she peeked inside to see the young male staring around his surroundings. When coming to look at the front Tamera instantly went away, before she started to snicker as her tail flicked to and fro behind her. She'd give this pup a scare all right! She couldn't wait to see the look on the male's face! Stopping in her laughter, Tamera instantly let out a roar! It echoed through the entire cave, too...

Unfortunately for Sparrow, he was too focused on the glittering stones to ear the quiet snicker, especially over the roar of the waterfall. He did, however, hear the roar. It seemed louder because it echoed off of the cave walls, but even if it hadn't, the outcome would have been the same. As soon as the roar had left the other's mouth, the hair on Sparrow's spine stood on end and he gave a loud yelp before skittering to his feet.... and consequently hitting his meal with his back foot, sending it careening over the side and down, down, down...

It only took him a second to realize what just happened. Ignoring the cat for just a moment, he ran back to the edge, staring down after what would have been his first meal in a few days. His stomach grumbled almost in protest, and he gave a little whine... But in a few seconds a snarl ran across his little face and he turned around, growling savagely at the cat.

"Do you realize... how long it took me... to CATCH THAT!?"

He gave a barking snarl at the end, emphasizing his apparent anger that he would be going without food for another few days. Sure, this thing could probably eat HIM if she wanted to, considering the difference in claws and teeth, but he was too tired and too hungry to care.

she's about the same age as he is. a year old ;3 if you haven't seen wut tamera looks like, it's in the art corner thread. just look for 'cubs' and u'll see them xD )

Tamera had seen the boy give a yip and a loud cry before he seemed to drop his meal. Bummer, Tamera hadn't realized that could have happened. But she was sure there'd be no hard feelings. But suddenly the pup growled at her, rather savagely and barbaric. He exclaimed his anger to her by mentioning and hinting how long it must have taken him to catch that.

Tamera gave a small grimace for a moment, before she gave a nervous chuckle. Raising a paw she gave him a playful smack on the cheek saying, "Aw don't be so mean about it! I was only trying to spook you! You know, I've heard everyone needs a good scare sometimes." She mentioned then with another laugh. But it seemed this pup wasn't for jokes. He seemed mighty pissed. "Look there are always other things to catch! I'm sure you'll get something." Tamera mentioned to him.

"But hey if you want something to eat come with me!" Tamera said. She'd been around wolves in her childhood, and she was used to befriending them. She hadn't realized though that not all wolves were those of friendship material. However, she still was respectful, and figured if this guy wanted a meal she might as well lead him to the food storage back at the pride.

"You mind telling me what your name is?" she commented then. "Mine's Tamera." she said with a polite bow. "And yours?"

(Yeah, but mountain lions are bigger than red wolves in the first place, so I was just assuming... XDD Anyway, Sparrow is 6 months, not 1 year.)

He stopped growling when Tamera batted him on the cheek, mostly from confusion rather than fear or calm. He raised a brow and let his lips fall back over his teeth, but he didn't change his stance until she mentioned more food. His stomach growled again pitifully, and he straightened up, tilting his head, the confused look still on his face. Then his ears flipped backwards and he lowered his head again, now sort of embarrassed.

"Mmm... food?"

He said this last quietly, almost to himself, thinking longingly of the taste of meat in his mouth. Still, this was NOT a wolf. Mother had talked of the big cats that roamed the mountains, but she'd never said anything about whether or not it was a good idea to befriend one. He licked his lips; well, he guessed it would be better to risk it if only to get a bite to eat than possibly die of starvation. But then she asked his name, bowing politely. This was something he'd never really learned to do since he'd never really spoken to anyone but his own family, but he'd seen his mother do it enough times to get the gist of it. Slowly and awkwardly, he gave a tiny little bow, keeping his eyes on Tamera.

"Erm... My name's Sparrow..."

He tried his best to be polite and hold back another growl of his stomach, but he failed miserably and his belly moaned and groaned and wished for food once more. He closed his eyes tightly during the little fit, but when it was done he opened one of them slowly, a nervous grin on his face.

"Eheh..."

lol true xD *facepalm* damn i fail -_-;;;; )))

Tamera watched as the pup seemed rather hesitant, but liked the idea of eating. Smiling, her tail behind her curled lightly before she got a name. Sparrow. He seemed a bit out of place as he gave his own little bow, but his eyes were glued onto her own. Hm, was he distrusting of her or something? Shrugging her shoulders rather mentally to herself, she said, "Pleased to meet you!" and gave another smack, but this time to the shoulder as a friendly gesture.

Another low rumbling emerged from the young one's belly. Eyes closed rather tight, she blinked before looking at him. He sure was a peculiar wolf. While his eyes were still shut tight, she took a step foward before her face was almost in front of his own. She stared at him in curiousity. One of them popped open though suddenly, and she instantly took a jumping step back. She knew she was a bit in his personal space. Grinning nervously herself, she composed herself before turning and walking away.

She glanced back his way, giving another grin before a turn of her head. "C'mon." she said. "You want food? It's this way." she mentioned, before she wandered off down the path's edge. "Stick with me and you'll be sure to get food in no time!" she called.
