The Elite (Any and all)

The night always gave the best cover, but it was that very special time just a half hour before true dark was when he was at his best. The dying embers that kissed the horizon and shed the faintest of light on a small town called Daedin. It was generally unimpressive, apparently it had been known for its chocolate but as it sat now, it was unlikely their heavenly delights had been tasted for some time. It was a simple town that had grown as a supply station during the great Dragon wars but when the fighting ended and the army moved on, traders and merchants moved in, making use of the fertile land and its key location for commerce, using the fields to live off of at first- and that was where the chocolate came in.

That was a while ago now though, Daedin was now more recently known as a holdout for the enemy, where the highest building was no more than three floors it was an easy capture early on in the war, a blitzkrieg tactic, and the mass of anti air encampments, double A's and SAM sites were nothing to scoff at but the real danger of this little town was the large addition where the city plaza had been. This was the enemy's trump card, this was his target- a massive rail gun with outfitted for anything. It rested on a massive rotating platform with five inch thick titanium steel surrounding it on all sides. His superiors called it the Heavenly Arrow. Stupid name. It was fitted for a single .90 millimeter bullet or a specialized 'missile' cartridge. One Arrow platform was fitted on several small towns within Farros' borders and between all of them they could bombard almost any point on the continent.

The country of Farros had never been known for its aggressive history, which was why their sudden invasion of such massive proportions totally caught the larger neighboring country of Sahel by surprise and they'd been on the defensive ever since. Not anymore though. Tomorrow marked the day of Sahel's counteroffensive. Daedin was the center-most of these Arrow platforms. The idea was to send a small group to neutralize the gun and then use it against the enemy, utilizing the small 'dead-zone' where the remaining guns couldn't accurately fire to siphon troops under the enemy's radar and hit them with a series of well-timed strikes to keep them occupied.

Adonis lowered his binoculars and put them back into their pouch at his hip. He was at the tree line about a mile away from the city limits. Before the forest had been much closer to town but the enemy torched most of the woods to prevent covert ops from sneaking up on them, the land between him and the enemy was flat and barren, hardly any cover. There were guardposts at regular intervals, he counted three from this angle. The maroon reptile had been sitting in this spot observing for most of the day. He had climbed up to a spot in a large tree, wedged in between two branches he was half kneeling and half prone, his feet under him but his body fully alert.

He wore standard camouflage pants and shirt, but his arms were mostly bare- that was because the large flaps that made up his wing could not easily be clothed. Instead it had been painted dark green and brown, but not so much as to prevent his dark scales from breathing. It wasn't the first time some fool reptile had died from such lack of intelligence, scales need oxygen as much as the lungs. Across his back he had an SVU-AS silenced sniper rifle with a camo skin. His mission for now was purely reconnaissance, the real attack would begin at first light, supposedly when they would least expect it. He was supposed to find cracks in their defenses, but the enemy ran a tight ship, from what he could tell they had radio checks every fifteen minutes and staggered watches, meaning half a watch was always on duty while a new watch was integrated in, and with the angles covering the forest and the land between so absolute it was almost impossible to get in undetected.

Almost.

Adonis pulled the small handheld radio to the side of his head. "Recon designate: Wraith, checking in" He was more than a mile away from the enemy encampment yet he still spoke in hushed tones. "Authentication Charlie one-niner two Bravo"

"Copy Wraith, what's your status?" The voice on the other end of the radio was gruff but young, a small black bear that had proven himself in a bunch of operations, blah blah blah. He was young, that was all Adonis saw. Of course, anyone was young compared to him, he was nearly eight times the age of anyone here- one of the many advantages of being a dragon. He was just a hired gun though, not paid to think, just to kill, the way he liked it. The first strike group was definitely an eclectic group. No planes could make it close, which meant no aerial recon and satellite images were being blocked. Adonis wasn't the only mercenary here, either, the higher ups found they needed a little extra insurance and decided to spend a little extra for success.

Of course, mercs were expendable. Better them than their own military, but they couldn't just leave this in the hands of sell-swords. "No further developments. They don't suspect a thing."

"Roger Wraith, get back to base"

Adonis put the radio back in its holster above his heart but didn't move from his perch. Young bloods. If their target was any less fortified he would've taken them all out himself- it wouldn't have been the first time, but Adonis wasn't so stupid as to think he was invincible. This would take a well-oiled operation to pull off. He didn't like relying on others, but this was paying handsomely so he would put up with it...for now.

A Gray hair sat on top of a tank smoking watching the sun sink. the tanks crew (ottars) were sitting behind it eating talking waiting. there had been to much waiting since the hair had been moved up here. him and what he would call his parnter a black wolf known as Leo who was currently posting mail, were doing good things back down the border on the southern front. Hare was like most hares tall thanks lean but unlike most he had a sharp eage to him, he had been in the shit to long, his rifle very coverted sniper rifle was resting next to him, his ears were tatty and torn, and at the current moment up right, in battle he would put a braclet around the baise of his ears and this would make them flop down with out being uncomfterbal. no good being a sniper with massive ears.

The black wolf who was his partner was now walking over to him, Leo was no a sesoned soilder no longer green, but the rashness of war hadnt seemed to take away that normalness that the hare had lost, he still seemed a nice friendly type of guy that would only get serios in the heat of battle.
He smiled at the hare as he jump up on to the tank and sat down next to him, taking a cigret that the hare offered and lighting it with his fathers zippo lighter, the dragon fighters war mask on the front with the 3 eights scrached into the side.

He flicked it shut and took a drag.
"so any ider what were waiting for", he said absent mindedly watching a cuple of soilders kick a ball around.
"nope", the hare replied.
"shit this is crap we were doing good back down south why bring us out here and make us sit around", the wolf said, he had joined up to this war to protect his contry not sit around and let it be taken, they had told them nothing when they had brought them here, just to "stand by".

"heard they got a scout cheaking some stuff out", the hare said.
"hmmm".

Leo put his assult rilfe down on the tank and sat back a little more getting more comfertbal.
Pred was the hares name (short for predator) he had took leo under his wing so to speak and tort him, then help him adapt then together they had become a good team. Pred got a lot of shit from normal predators thanks to him being a herbivor but thanks to the hares good kick boxing skills soon tort them to shut up.

The return

Post by Mak » 29-11-2010 22:27

Camp wasn't far away, not by Wraith's standards, but it was still a decent hike. He didn't have to worry about enemy patrols this far out, nor did he have to worry about his own comrades mistaking him for an enemy, dragons weren't exactly common to the rest of the world and he had a reputation.

The camp was well-hidden in the forest, any unsuspecting souls would get the surprise of their life, and then die quickly. This had everything a real army would have, just a lack of numbers. There were only four tanks and two armored transport trucks, a couple of ATV's and a good handful of soldiers. This was covert, they'd be getting no support should things go sour, no air support, no mortars, no missile strikes.

The watch patrols recognized him and waved him through to speak with the captain for this mission, some decorated she-leopard who got her medals during peace-time exercises. She wasn't stupid by any means, but Wraith didn't like putting his life in her hands, it was why he wanted scouting duty.

"We're anxiously awaiting your report, Wraith" she said curtly. They were at a long rectangular table with a general map of Daedin and several other anthros who may or may not have been group leaders, may not even be military, just waiting for him to fill in the blanks in their information, which was quite a lot.

"Nigh impenetrable fortress- if this is to succeed everything has to go exactly according to plan" The leopardess didn't like some random merc usurping his authority, but she stayed silent for now. "The target is directly in the center, here, with watchtowers here, here and here and a mile of no cover between us and them. All guard towers will have to be neutralized silently at the exact same time." He gave more information about the watches and everything and finished by saying that the ATV's and armored transports had 15 minutes to reach the wall of the city at the lowest speeds possible to limit the noise they made. ATVs wouldn't be a problem, but the transports would be.

"This plan all hinges on the assumption we have enough men to take out three guard towers at once" The leopardess exclaimed. We have four tanks which should be more than enough"

Wraith was expecting this, however. "But your plan hinges on the idea that we have enough firepower to overwhelm them before reinforcements arrive. These aren't second-rate bandits. You rush in rashly and you will have a lot of death on your hands. If they have all this set up, you can be certain there will at least be RPGs if not other heavy weapons, plus the other Arrow stations can rain hell on us within minutes of us revealing ourselves."

"Besides" Adonis continued, "We are the best, I saw at least another sniper around camp. We only need three to get this done, one for each guard post"

"You can take out four guards by yourself?" The captain asked.

"Won't need to, guard shifts. Any sniper worth their salt can take out two guards in quick succession. If you have a better idea, I'm all ears"

The sun was quickly setting, but that my no means indicated that the day was over. Whilst some lounged about, talking and eating, others were on patrol. Most of them felt it was a meaningless task - no idiot would waltz right into an enemy base without first alerting the guard towers to their presence. In any case, they were on orders to report or - if the necessity showed itself - annihilate any event of trouble within city limits. Anything on the outskirts that was not an obvious threat would be watched, but no orders were given for a patrol of over twenty meters beyond the final house. So for the most part no one even ventured near the boundaries of the town, preferring to stay near the center. Some "off-duty" soldiers were stationed near the outskirts just in case, but for the time being there was no sense of iron-clad security.

Just one of the things that Dominic hated about this damn army.

The dragon - the only one he knew of in any military branch of the country - was one of the soldiers on patrol that evening, armed with a SCAR-H assault rifle that was nowhere near the caliber of weapon he was used to. His old weapon, a rifle he had modified himself, had been bent and broken in an earlier skirmish in a different military installment miles away. For now he had been issued the standard rifle - one of a new batch that had been sent in as replacement for just such weaponry as his old one. Not that it really mattered to him - if it could shoot a bullet or a rocket, he'd take the damn thing.

There was something... off... about the late twilight. As he stepped at a leisurely pace through the encampment, something nagged at his brain. It was as if he could sense something without it actually being there. Without any idea what it was, however, the nagging was beginning to annoy him. Sometimes he thought it might be easier to be more common anthro. Maybe a squirrel or something. Then he wouldn't have to deal with the strange stuff that seemed inherent to dragonkind.

Continuing on his walk-around, he came upon two of his... acquaintances. He knew them both well enough from other battles, but it wasn't as if they were all buddy buddy. Besides, the Leo guy... He had a dragon fighter emblem. Not that Dom was angry, afraid, or even uneasy around the guy. He just didn't know what to make of him yet. The wolf seemed nice enough, but who really knew? As he came within an acceptable distance of the tank, he crouched down and jumped up onto the massive machine, landing with a muffled CRACK of claws hitting metal behind them. They had been talking about a scout or something by the time he had landed, and he quickly guessed where the conversation was going.

"Scout my ass. There's nothing out there but field mice and empty shells."

Well, that wasn't completely true. Something was definitely out there. That's what that feeling was. But Dom couldn't prove it, so... For all inquiries, nothing was there.

Yet.

(I wasn't planning on replying next, but to get this moving I'll see what I can do)

"Alright, dismissed. Get some rest, there'll be a meeting at 0430" the leopardess stated. Wraith mocked a salute and left. He smiled to himself, he wasn't the military, so he didn't mind ticking them off here and there, not like they could do anything about it anyway, he only answered to money or at least the promise thereof. He surveyed the camp, nobody was really doing much of anything, hardly anybody knew what was going on.

There was a makeshift mess hall and Wraith grabbed chicken leg and started munching on it as he walked, the juices dripping from his maw. But as he had been standing in line he had seen something that nagged at his peripherals but he forced himself to ignore it for his sanity, but now his meal was mostly done he couldn't turn away any longer. There was a suspicious glow coming from one of the tanks. Adonis narrowed his eyes and in the low light of dusk he could easily make out the golden markings of a Runic dragon. The glow was hardly visible, but Adonis saw them and his blood boiled. One hundred and sixty years of self-taught restraint just went out the window as he marched over to the tank, fists clenched.

"I see they'll just let anyone into the army, eh, 'o noble one'?" Wraith hissed, his voice seething with anger and dripping with poison. A slight voice in the back of his head told him it would be unwise to pick a fight here of all places, but the sight of a runic dragon, one of the so-called superior dragons who had ruined his life and the lives of many other slate dragons, infuriated him. This was going to cost them extra.
